October 2018

Due to an incredibly busy pumpkin picking season, the Great Pumpkin Smash will now be taking place on Thursday 1st November only, plus it is now only £2.50 to take part!

The Pumpkin Smash is all about using up the remaining crop that is no good for picking or eating, and returning it to the soil to help our fields recover for next season. There will be summer fete style games and tractor smash demos, where we will use our farm machinery for some messy fun!

We have had thousands of visitors to the Spookley Pumpkin Festival since the 13th October and as a result, we do not have as many pumpkins left for the Smash as anticipated – even though we started with well over 30,000!

We are sorry for any disappointment caused, however we have once again been blown away by the popularity of the Spookley Pumpkin Festival. Thank you to everyone that has visited us over the last three weeks, and we look forward to a fun-filled day at the Pumpkin Smash tomorrow!

The Great Pumpkin Smash will open from 10am-4pm tomorrow (Thursday 1st November), with last entry at 3pm. To take part, you just need to pay for one small pumpkin per person (£2.50) and you get the rest to smash for free!

Remember to wear old clothes, as it could be a messy day and on arrival, visit the carving barn before making your way to the field. We will also have plenty of catering on site with the marquee, Udder Room Café and Playbarn.

Please be aware that once the pumpkins are gone, they’re gone, so come early in the day to avoid disappointment!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  For safety reasons, visitors are not permitted to bring their own bats or similar equipment to smash pumpkins. These items will be retained by staff on admission to the pumpkin field.

  2. New to Farrington’s: The Sharpening Service

New to Farrington’s are The Sharpening Service, a family run professional sharpening business.

They can sharpen almost anything; Hairdressing Scissors, Dog Grooming Scissors, Dressmaking Scissors, Pinking Shears, Kitchen Knives, Dog & Horse Clipper Blades, Podiatry Nippers, Woodworking Tools… there is very little they can’t sharpen, so just ask them if you are unsure!

Their customers consist of ordinary domestic users and professionals alike, and you can view their many testimonials on the website below. They try to give a service that they would expect and take great pride in all their work. They don’t want you to use them just the once, hopefully you will keep coming back for the excellent all-round service they aim to provide.

A lot of their work is ordinary household kitchen items, so don’t be worried about only wanting one knife or one pair of hairdressing or dressmaking scissors sharpening. Never throw out an old knife as they will make it as sharp, if not sharper, than the day you bought it!

You can also go into the workshop and watch how it’s done; they can also give you plenty of advice for free.

Find them opposite the entrance to the Farm Shop. Opening hours will be 9am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9am-3pm.

    Call us on 0791 900 6766 or visit www.sharpening-service.co.uk.

  3. Extra Dates for Pumpkin Picking

Due to popular demand, we will now be opening our pumpkin fields for additional days in October!

In addition to previously advertised dates, we will now be opening from 10am-4pm on Monday 22nd to Friday 26th October for pumpkin picking and carving only.

Spookley activities*, such as story time, movie and trailer rides, will not be running on these additional dates. However, our pumpkin fields will be open for those that just wish to pick and carve pumpkins. Carving kits cost £1.50 and pumpkins start at £2.50.

We will be open for the full range of Spookley activities this weekend (20th-21st October) and then half-term from the 27th-31st October, followed by the Great Pumpkin Smash on the 1st and 2nd November.

Spookley Pumpkin Festival event details are available on our website here or like the event on Facebook for regular updates.

  4. Top 5 Tips for Pumpkin-Pickers

If you’re planning on visiting us this October for the Spookley Pumpkin Festival and Great Pumpkin Smash, here’s what you need to know before travelling to pick your pumpkin…

    1. Bring your wellies (and a pen!)

We are a working farm and the pumpkins grow in a field. Even if it hasn’t been raining a lot, it may still be muddy, so come prepared with sturdy footwear and sensible outdoor clothing! Also, we don’t provide marker pens, so you will need to bring one if you want to sketch your masterpiece onto you pumpkin before carving.

    2. Event parking and buggies

Parking for pumpkin-goers is in the fields. If you are meeting people at the event, please consider car sharing to help us reduce site traffic and keep our fields in better condition. As well as parking in the field, the track to pumpkin field can be bumpy, so although it is possible to take a buggy, you may find it easier to bring your little one in a baby carrier, or leave the buggy in the car until you’ve picked your pumpkin!

    3. Thinking of bringing your dog?

We love dogs, but for health and safety reasons, we cannot allow dogs in the pumpkin fields. Although dogs are allowed in other outdoor areas on site, only Assistant Dogs are allowed in the Café, Shop and Playbarn, so bringing your pooch will limit where you can go.

    4. Opening Hours

We will be open for pumpkin picking on the two weekends before half-term (13-14 and 20-21 October), and for pumpkin picking during half-term from 27-31 October, followed by the pumpkin smash on the 1-2 November. We will be open from 10am-4pm each day, with LAST ENTRY at 3pm – after this you won’t have time to complete the activities!

    5. And finally, facilities on site…

Pumpkins aside, we are primarily a Farm Shop and Café. The farm shop stocks a generous selection of artisan foods and we make a wide range of homemade goods for our deli, shop and café right here in our farm kitchens.

On top of this, we also have soft play in the Cowtastic Playbarn, whilst our shopping village has a range of shops to explore, including our Christmas shop (Farmer Christmas) and Fish & Chip Shop, which will be open throughout the festival.

We do have a card machine in the Farm Shop, however it does charge. We will take cards in most areas on site, however smaller street food vendors and merchandise stands may be cash only, so we would recommend bringing a small amount of cash with you.
